State rate vs local rate
A state's sales tax rate is only the base layer. Most states also let counties and cities add their own local rate on top, sometimes 1 to 5 points higher, so the effective rate on a receipt in a specific city can run well above the state's published number.
This calculator uses state base rates only. For the exact rate a specific customer owes, check your city or county's combined rate, or use your storefront's live tax calculation, which applies the correct combined rate for the shipping address at checkout.
Economic nexus: when you owe tax in a state you don't operate in
Since the 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair Supreme Court ruling, states can require an out-of-state seller to collect their sales tax once the seller crosses an economic nexus threshold. Most states use $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions into that state within the current or prior year, though the exact figures, and whether both conditions or just one trigger nexus, vary by state.
Cross the threshold in a state and you generally need to register there and start collecting tax, even with no warehouse, office or employee physically located in it. Track your sales by state as you scale, this is easy to miss until a state notices.
Marketplace facilitator laws
If you sell through a marketplace like Amazon, Etsy or Walmart Marketplace, the marketplace itself is usually required to calculate, collect and remit sales tax on your behalf under marketplace facilitator laws, now adopted in nearly every state that has a sales tax.
Selling through your own store is different. There, you or your platform's tax engine is responsible for calculating the right rate and remitting it to each state where you have nexus, which is what this calculator, and your storefront's checkout, exist to help with.
