Which barcode format do I need?

If a retailer or marketplace will scan the product at checkout, you need a GS1-issued UPC (12 digits, North America) or EAN-13 (13 digits, most of the world). Amazon requires GS1 codes for most categories. You buy the number from GS1, then generate the image here.

For your own warehouse, packing slips and inventory apps, Code 128 is the right choice: it encodes letters and numbers, is compact, and every scanner reads it. Code 39 is older and larger but still common on labels. ISBN is EAN-13 with a 978 or 979 prefix and is what bookstores and Amazon expect on books.

About check digits

UPC and EAN numbers end in a check digit calculated from the other digits. Scanners use it to reject misreads. If you type 11 digits for a UPC or 12 for an EAN the generator adds the correct check digit; if you type the full number it verifies it and warns you if it is wrong.

Printing barcodes that scan

Print black on white at 100% scale or larger. Do not stretch a barcode: scale it proportionally or regenerate it at the size you need. Leave blank space either side of the bars. For labels under 3 cm wide use Code 128 rather than Code 39. Test a printed sample with a phone scanner app before ordering labels.

Frequently asked questions

Is the barcode generator free?
Yes. Free, unlimited, no account, and the barcodes are generated in your browser.
Does this give me an official UPC number?
No. Official UPC and EAN numbers are issued by GS1. This tool turns a number you own into a scannable barcode image.
Do I need a GS1 barcode to sell on Amazon?
For most categories, yes. Amazon checks UPC and EAN numbers against the GS1 database. For internal use and your own store you can use any format.
Which format should I use for my own inventory?
Code 128. It supports letters and numbers, is compact, and every scanner and inventory app reads it.
Can I generate many barcodes at once?
Yes. Switch to bulk mode, paste one code per line, and download a ZIP with a PNG or SVG for each.
What is the check digit?
The last digit of a UPC, EAN or ISBN, calculated from the others so scanners can detect errors. The generator calculates or validates it automatically.
PNG or SVG?
SVG for print at any size and for label design software. PNG for quick use in documents and online listings.
Can I add the number under the bars?
Yes. The human-readable text is shown under the barcode by default and can be turned off.
