What PayPal actually charges in 2026

PayPal's standard commercial rate is 2.99% + $0.49 per transaction for most US sales: goods and services payments, invoices, and PayPal or card checkout on your own site. That rate applies whether the buyer pays with a card, their PayPal balance, or a linked bank account.

International payments add 1.5% on top of the base rate, since PayPal takes on more currency and fraud risk when the buyer is outside the US. There's also a separate micropayment rate, 4.99% + $0.09, built for small transactions where the flat $0.49 fee would otherwise eat too much of the sale. It usually pays off below roughly $10.

The formula, and how to reverse it

Fee = (amount × rate) + fixed fee. Net = amount − fee. A $50 domestic sale at 2.99% + $0.49 costs $1.50 + $0.49 = $1.99 in fees, leaving you $48.01.

To solve backward, find the price that nets a target amount T: price = (T + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate). To net exactly $50, charge (50 + 0.49) ÷ (1 − 0.0299) ≈ $52.04.

Frequently asked questions

What does PayPal charge for a standard sale?
2.99% + $0.49 per transaction for most US commercial and goods-and-services payments as of 2026.
Does PayPal charge extra for international payments?
Yes, add 1.5% on top of the base rate for buyers paying from outside the US.
What is the PayPal micropayment rate?
4.99% + $0.09, aimed at small transactions where the fixed $0.49 fee would otherwise take too large a bite. It's usually worth switching to below roughly $10.
Does PayPal charge the seller or the buyer?
The seller. PayPal deducts its fee from the amount received before it lands in your balance.
How do I calculate the price to charge to net a specific amount after PayPal fees?
Use reverse mode: price = (target amount + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − fee rate).
Are PayPal fees different for invoices vs checkout?
No, the same core commercial rate applies to invoices, checkout buttons, and checkout embedded on your own site.
Does PayPal charge a fee to receive money from friends and family?
Personal payments funded by a bank account or balance are typically free domestically. Funded by a card, or sent internationally, a fee applies. This calculator assumes commercial payments, the type stores receive.
Can I pass PayPal's fee on to the customer?
Some sellers add a surcharge equal to the fee. Check your state's card surcharging rules before doing this, they vary.
