Which favicon sizes actually get used in 2026

Browsers no longer agree on one size, so a modern favicon set covers several. A 32x32 and 16x16 PNG pair (bundled inside favicon.ico) covers browser tabs and bookmark bars on desktop. A 180x180 PNG named apple-touch-icon.png is what iOS uses when someone adds your store to their home screen. A 192x192 and a 512x512 PNG cover Android home screens and the install prompt if a shopper ever adds your storefront as a shortcut.

You do not need to hand-place every tag yourself. This generator builds the full set from one upload and gives you the exact HTML to paste into your theme's head section, so nothing is missing and nothing is oversized.

Why PNG fallbacks matter alongside SVG

An SVG favicon looks crisp at any size and some newer browsers will use it directly, but support is still inconsistent across older browsers, email clients that render your site, and most social share previews. The safe pattern is a PNG-based set as the default with an SVG offered as an enhancement, not a replacement. That is why this tool exports PNG and ICO files rather than SVG only: they work everywhere, today, with no extra testing.

Adding the favicon to your store theme

Unzip the download and upload the files to your theme's assets or root folder, keeping the filenames as given. Paste the HTML snippet from the ZIP into the head section of your theme's layout file, above the closing head tag. Most storefront platforms, including LaunchMyStore, have a dedicated favicon upload field in theme or branding settings where you can drop the 512x512 PNG directly instead of editing code.

Clear your browser cache or open the store in a private window after uploading. Favicons are aggressively cached, so a stale tab icon after a change almost always means the browser, not the file.

Frequently asked questions

Is the favicon generator free?
Yes. It is free and unlimited, with no account needed. Generate as many versions as you like.
What files do I actually get?
A ZIP containing favicon.ico (16x16 and 32x32), apple-touch-icon.png (180x180), icon-192.png, icon-512.png, site.webmanifest, and an HTML snippet with the correct link tags.
Can I make a favicon without a logo?
Yes. Type one or two letters, choose a background colour and a text colour, and the generator draws a simple lettermark icon for you.
What image format should I upload?
A square PNG, JPG or SVG works best. Square source images avoid stretching; anything non-square gets centre-cropped.
Why does my old favicon still show up after I changed it?
Favicons are cached hard by browsers. Hard refresh, clear the site's cached data, or open the page in a private window to see the update.
Do I need the site.webmanifest file?
It is optional but recommended. It tells mobile browsers the icon and name to use if a shopper adds your store to their home screen.
Does this work for a Shopify or LaunchMyStore theme?
Yes. Upload the 512x512 PNG in your theme or branding settings if there is a favicon field, or paste the provided HTML into your layout file's head section.
Is anything uploaded to a server?
No. The image is processed in your browser and never leaves your device.
